Dark Numchuck Update

So I just wanted to let everyone know that things are going apace with My Life as an Evil Genius. We have decided to drop down to a once a week schedule for now, updating on Fridays. I really didn't expect the site to be a hit overnight, so until we have more demand, I think that a slow but steady schedule is the way to go.

In other news, I am halfway through my seventh month of unemployment. The point of this post is not to complain, but I must say that discouragement is at an all time high. I've had so many false starts and fake outs that it's really becoming depressing. I do have a few jobs on the horizon, so hope is there, but it is faint. Whatever your belief in the supremacy of God, I can't help but feel that this has a purpose behind it, but I just wish I could learn my lesson quickly and get it over with.

Also, I plan to start a blog for the baby soon to post all of his pictures and whatnot. I'm sure his presence on Facebook Photos will still be strong, but this will contain more than pictures. I'm keeping it separate from my personal blog because I want to avoid boring all my friends with a constant barrage of baby-related stories. So keep on the lookout for that soon.

Oh, and finally, I'm ridiculously excited about playing DnD 4th edition. I've been listening to the Penny-arcade podcast and I hope to play it the game at the upcoming Ancient City Con.

I even have decorative dice.

Babies are a gift from....NBC?

Hey Everyone,

Because Angela and I are in the height of her pregnancy, we find pregnancy and baby-related humor hi-larious! That being said, the new movie "Baby Mama" has a site that allows you to upload two pictures of the parents and simulate what your child would look like. Since we don't have money for 3-d ultrasounds, this is our only recourse until the child is born.

Without further ado, here is the fruit of my loins:

And just for fun, here is what would happen if Leia and Blake somehow procreated:

And finally, this would be the product of Matt and Trogdor mashup:

And you didn't even know Trogdor was a girl!

Ideas crop in the strangest places

So I've been reading a lot of books lately. This is generally not a dangerous pastime, as I try not to make it a habit of reading books that physically harm me. One book however, has harmed me quite a bit lately in a mental sense. I began reading Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card recently, and before I dove into the glorious tales of Ender Wiggin, I read the introduction that Mr. Card gave about the history of the book. He details the time that he came up with the concept and the arduous journey that that little manuscript has endured. In fact, as a bit of trivia, I found it interesting that Ender's Game proper was written simply to establish the character of Ender Wiggin so that Speaker for the Dead didn't have a boring protagonist.

Nonetheless, this lured me once again into the fanciful dream of writing a book. I always toss around ideas and I love creating things. The trouble is, lately I haven't been in a creative mood. My life circumstances are such that my focus has been (rightfully so) on my family and my lack of a job. But with spare time and nothing productive to pursue, I toyed around with the idea of writing again. I browsed some writing tips and tricks and advice given out by a broad spectrum of editors and successful authors. One of the seemingly most valuable pieces of advice I saw was to keep a file for your story, and then keep a separate file for your notes on the story.

Armed with this seemingly priceless piece of advice, I decided to set my goals low for now and write a short story involving an element of science fiction. I started envisioning what my character could have as his/her motivation. I decided that I always wanted to write about the walking paradox, so I decided to choose a person whose motivation was religion, but whose actions were decidedly opposite. As I began writing notes about my character's thoughts and struggles, I began to realize that I was simply writing about my own. As I pressed on, I ended up with half a page of notes comprised of nothing but questions that trouble me. Questions I can't answer myself. Issues bothering about religion that for whatever reason, I can't get over. I soon abandoned my original premise and continued on. Now I have an entire page of notes (mostly questions) that I have about Christianity.

I think what I might do now is write a non-fiction book dealing with these questions. Each chapter can be dedicated to a group of related questions. I know that I am not alone in my questioning. I have no clues about the answers to these questions, but I'm going to start researching, not only the opinions of others, but really examine what I really think about all of this religion business. I find that one question always tends to lead to another, and while some are simply rabbit trails to dead ends, others lead to legitimate, yet endless questions. I must find what question, what issue is at the heart, and solve it. I owe it to myself, my wife and unborn son, and to everyone else who also questions and seeks for the truth. I'll view this slow project as sort of an investigation. I have no dreams of getting published, I simply want a record of the discoveries that I make and the thoughts that I think.

I hope to hear feedback from those who read this. Help me hone this into something worth reading, if not for the world then for yourselves.
